The Physics Behind Nozzle Choice

Heat transfer depends on substrate conductivity. Aluminum car panels conduct 200 W/m·K. Oak conducts 0.17 W/m·K. Plastic conducts 0.2-0.5 W/m·K but softens at 80-120°C. The same airstream behaves differently on each.

Wood and Veneer: Reflector Nozzle

Wide, diffused airflow. Spreads heat to prevent the 60-70°C adhesive failure zone. Use at 8-12 cm distance, keep moving. The reflector body shields adjacent areas from stray hot air.

Metal and Car Panels: Flat Nozzle

Directed, parallel airflow. Metal tolerates higher temperatures but paint removal efficiency peaks at 200-260°C surface temperature. The flat nozzle lets you work closer without the turbulence that cools the stream. Move in passes, let the panel cool between layers on thin vintage steel.

Plastic Trim: Reduced-Diameter Nozzle

Restricts total heat flux even when the gun runs at full output. The smaller orifice limits mass flow rate. Pair with the 300W setting and constant motion. Check surface temperature every 10 seconds; ABS softens at 105°C, polypropylene at 140°C.

Glass and Detail Work: Hook Nozzle

Wraps airflow around edges and into recesses. Useful for window frames with multiple paint layers. The hooked shape prevents direct impingement on glass, reducing thermal shock risk.
