Veneer adhesive, typically animal glue or early PVA, begins to soften at 60°C and releases at 70°C. Exceed this and the veneer lifts, bubbles, or cracks. The goal is not maximum heat; it is controlled, verified heat.
A heat gun rated at 300°C or 600°C describes air temperature at the nozzle exit, not at the work surface. At 5 cm distance with a reflector nozzle, that same airstream may deliver 150°C to the substrate. At 10 cm with a spreader nozzle, it may drop to 80°C. The only relevant measurement is the surface temperature you actually apply.
Use an infrared thermometer with 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio. Aim at the stripped area immediately after passing the gun, while the surface is hottest. Keep the gun moving at 5-8 cm per second. If your IR reading approaches 55°C, increase distance or reduce wattage. The 300W mini gun in our kits reaches equilibrium faster at lower output, giving finer control on curved veneer panels than high-wattage units.
The glass protection nozzle (wide, deflected flow) spreads heat across a broader area, reducing peak temperature. The hook nozzle concentrates airflow for edge work but requires faster movement. Match the nozzle to the task, then verify with the thermometer.
